If you spend money in Buchanan County, is about you. Voters approved it Tuesday, 13,258 to 10,898, authorizing a quarter-cent sales tax that News-Press NOW says is expected to raise about $4 million a year.

The tax applies across Buchanan County, so travelers' purchases count too. Commissioners will appoint a nine-member board that hires an executive director and develops bylaws and guidelines for agencies applying for funding.

Turnout was 46.6%, just under the 50% the county clerk's office projected.

  • Under state law, money could support 10 service areas
  • Serves children ages 19 and younger
  • Applicants include the YWCA, Voices of Courage and Noyes Home for Children
  • Proposed by Buchanan County Kids

Evergy Missouri West asks state regulators for a rate increase that would add about $17.25 a month

If sends your electric bill, a bigger one may be on the way. The utility has asked the Missouri Public Service Commission for higher rates, which would add about $17.25 a month for a typical residential customer if approved as filed.

$17.25more a month for a typical residential customer

That's if approved as filed, for a customer using 1,005 kilowatt-hours a month, Evergy said.

News-Press NOW says Evergy is citing new power generation, grid improvements and rising costs of providing service. The company counts more than $650 million in grid investments since its 2024 rate case. Expected revenue from two large data centers makes the ask $61 million lower than it would have been.

  • Evergy Missouri West serves more than 340,000 customers, including St. Joseph
  • Most Kansas City-area customers, served by Evergy Missouri Metro, aren't affected
