COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Second Harvest held its annual Holiday Express program Thursday morning, providing essential food (including chicken, squash, onions, eggs, potatoes and pork loin) to about 400 people in the community. Samantha Davis from the St. Joseph School District said the program helps families facing food insecurity during the holiday break.  KQ2
  • The Chamber of Commerce announced Shop St. Joe's winning numbers and Jackie Miller claimed the $10K grand prize while shopping at Narrative Home & Boutique on Sunday. Miller plans to donate part of her winnings to a local charity and share with her kids at Christmas.  KQ2

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Missouri Western State University completed its new 10,000 sqft storage building Thursday and renamed it the Thevenot Family Building to honor the family's support of the Houlne Center for Convergent Technology. The building frees space for equipment and training + celebrates over two decades of local involvement.  KQ2
  • The St. Joseph School District committee met Thursday, Dec. 18 to review a mid-year report on student progress and teacher efforts. District officials will use coaching conversations to boost growth and work toward a 45% proficiency goal (their current target).  KQ2

SPORTS NEWS

  • The second ranked Benton Cardinals rallied for a nine-point win over Olathe North Wednesday night at Springer Gymnasium after a 20 to 1 deficit in the second quarter. Coach Jared Boone, named MSHSAA Basketball Coach of the Year, will lead the team at Saturday’s Family First Hoops Classic at Staley High School.  KQ2
  • High school basketball returns as the 4th annual Holiday Hoops Classic begins today at 4:00 p.m. at Civic Arena, with Lafayette girls facing Park Hill South (which features top recruit Addison Bjorn) and games continuing through Saturday.  St. Joseph Post
