COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local groups are ready to help as energy bills are set to rise with the coming winter. CAPSTJOE’s LIHEAP program will offer a one-time state credit and $800 crisis funds to avoid service disconnections — while Spire Energy’s Dollar Help program invites customers to support families.  KQ2

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The St. Joseph School District Finance Committee reviewed a financial report and discussed budget practices, including next year’s planning and the school consolidation plan, during a Tuesday meeting. District officials said the review (which gathered committee input for better transparency) did not signal any fee changes.  KQ2
  • Three candidates (Jacob McMillian, Cynthia Cook, and Deborah Schmuck) filed for two School Board seats with three-year terms at the district office at 1415 North 26th St; filings remain open through Dec. 30 from 3 to 5 p.m. for qualified candidates.  KQ2
  • St. Joseph native Josh Donaldson (a Central High alumnus) earned the prestigious Marshall Scholarship and will study water sanitation and global environment at the University of Leeds then University of Edinburgh, marking a major milestone for local talent. He is Mizzou’s first Marshall Scholar since 2010.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • St. Joseph City Hall is being renovated using ARPA and CIP funds (sidewalk repairs and limestone replacement included) in preparation for its 100th anniversary in 2027; the project upgrades the fountain and grand staircase while the Missouri Theater is also refreshed for the centennial celebrations.  St. Joseph Post

SPORTS NEWS

  • The third annual Bill Snyder Classic (with about 1,600 fans) at Civic Arena featured Kansas State upsetting Ole Miss on a Sunday game. Director Brett Esely said next year the event will return to Saturday to improve scheduling, ticket pricing, and marketing.  St. Joseph Post
