COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, local libraries such as the Downtown, Carnegie, East Hills, and Washington Park, along with the Rolling Hills libraries and the Salvation Army, are serving as warming centers as temperatures drop to single digits. Residents should check hours and note restrictions on alcohol, weapons, smoking and animals.  St. Joseph Post
  • The St. Joseph Convention and Visitors Bureau is hosting 12 international tour operators + travel writers today to explore the city’s attractions including the Pony Express Museum and the Patee House, as part of the Travel South USA International Showcase in Kansas City.  KQ2
  • Rogers Pharmacy is hosting its fourth annual coat drive to collect coats, gloves, hats, and scarves for the homeless and food kitchen. Donations can be dropped off at the pharmacy's front entrance until Thursday, Dec. 11.  KQ2

ECONOMY NEWS

  • St. Joseph is a top city for job opportunities after an 81% rise in Indeed listings was reported by Axios News from Feb. 1 to Oct. 31; over 3,000 jobs are available as local employers use online hiring to build a regional work hub.  KQ2

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Missouri Western State University exceeded its Giving Tuesday donation drive goal by raising over $32,000 to support student programs. The drive stays open through Friday, Dec. 5 (funding Campus Cupboard supplies and scholarships).  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Kehoe expects that state and local incentives will keep the Chiefs and Royals in Missouri + he said Jackson County and local groups will deliver proposals to secure the teams’ future. The Royals are asking fans for views on new stadium locations downtown and in Clay County.  St. Joseph Post
  • City officials announced that contractors working for Missouri American Water will inspect over 16,000 homes and businesses for potential lead service lines; letters will be sent ahead of visits so renters can call the utility if they don't receive a notice, and crews will not force entry.  St. Joseph Post
  • City Hall now shines with new green and red LED lights for Christmas, debuting with Holiday Park and South Pole displays at Krug + Hyde Parks. The update is part of improvements that prepare the building for its 100th birthday in 2027.  St. Joseph Post

SPORTS NEWS

  • St. Joseph is hosting the MSHSAA high school football championships at Spratt Stadium on Missouri Western campus today — featuring all six classes with the event kicking off at 7 p.m. with an 8-man game between Worth County and Rock Port.  St. Joseph Post
  • Spratt Stadium at Missouri Western State University will host all seven Missouri high school football championship games — the first full Show-Me Bowl slate for the venue.  KQ2
