COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The United Way Volunteer Center compiled a list of holiday volunteer and giving opportunities for St. Joseph—covering tasks like holiday store setup and meal preparation for families, clubs, church groups, individuals and organizations. The guide will be updated as new opportunities become available on United Way’s website.  KQ2
  • Second Harvest is offering holiday meals through its annual Holiday Express program and will hold a registration day on Tuesday, Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 915 Douglas St.—families must register one household with an ID or orange card while details for the chicken giveaway will be announced later.  KQ2
  • St. Joseph residents planning for the holiday weekend can visit Krug Park, which will become Holiday Park at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, where hot cocoa, cookies, and warm gear are encouraged while Santa will be seen in his workshop—Hyde Park will then turn into the South Pole at 6:30 p.m. with free treats provided by the Southside Progressive Association and another visit from Santa.  KQ2
  • Downtown St. Joseph will host a Christmas lighting ceremony this Saturday at 5:30 p.m. as local businesses sponsor a free event with a red cottage display featuring Santa, Buddy the Elf, and the Grinch — inviting families to shop local for unique gifts.  St. Joseph Post
  • AFL-CIO Community Services said 731 applications for its Adopt-A-Family Christmas program were received as of Monday and 182 families have been adopted so far. The agency needs more adopters — including single adults and seniors in care facilities — and donations of new gifts and toys to support more families this holiday season.  KQ2
  • The Joseph Project led a cleanup at Downtown Felix Square to raise nearly $6,200 for 100 students to join the school basketball league, as local groups nearly met a $6,000 goal by Nov. 25 + bolstering youth sports support. Volunteers from town departments and non-profits joined together + setting the stage for future initiatives.  KQ2
  • Main Street Saint Joseph will distribute a total of $500 in free Main Street Bucks to the first 50 shoppers at 11 a.m. on Nov. 29 in front of Red Holiday Cottage in Coleman Hawkins Park—each recipient must be 18 or older and will also receive a Shop Small canvas bag. The Bucks are valid only on Nov. 29 at the participating Downtown businesses and cannot be exchanged for change.  KQ2

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Pappy's Grill & Pub on Messanie Street closed after 20 years because of rising costs and a tough economy — a letter on the building thanked its loyal customers.  KQ2

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At a school board work session Monday night, a Missouri School Boards’ Association official said mistakes in claiming $4.6 million and $5.1 million for Title reimbursements and wrong budget estimates caused the school district’s reserves to drop from 16% to 10%. District leaders are now working to rebuild the reserves—steps taken after delays were found in July and updated funds were received in October.  KQ2
  • The St. Joseph School District Board of Education voted on Monday night to approve Plan 4BR by a 5 to 2 vote after public comments ended, and the plan will shift the district to two high schools—Benton and Central while moving Lafayette to a middle school and Robidoux to an elementary school for the 2026-2027 school year.  KQ2

HEALTH NEWS

  • Aetna Better Health donated $30,000, split evenly to two local agencies (Northwest Missouri United Labor Community Services Agency and Community Action Partnership of Greater St. Joseph) to fund the AFL-CIO Diaper Depot program that gives hygiene supplies to families with young children. The donation will support the program until next August and help families across 18 counties in Missouri and Kansas.  KQ2
  • Family Guidance Center now offers confidential Gamblers Anonymous meetings for residents facing gambling problems—its Tuesday group met at 12:30 p.m. on Nov 25 at Washington Park Library while its Thursday group will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Dec 4 at Rolling Hills Library.  KQ2

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Craig Realty Group is purchasing the historic Commerce Bank building at 328 Felix Street after Commerce Bank closes its branch on Dec. 12th, 2025. The firm will begin renovations with a roof replacement and parapet wall repairs, then deep clean the stone exterior and cover windows with plywood—displayed with downtown photos to retain the building’s character.  KQ2
