COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The USPS continues its 113-year Operation Santa program that helps families get Christmas gifts by allowing online requests for assistance or adoptions. Letter adoptions begin Monday, Nov. 17 — the program meets varied needs such as toys, electronics and clothing. KQ2
- ➤ United Way of Greater St. Joseph is calling on volunteers to assemble 2,100 shelf-stable Meal Kits for local households in need — a $100,000 donation from Mosaic Life Care and its Foundation supports the effort, with sessions scheduled from November 17 through November 25 at 118 S. 5th St. KQ2
- ➤ Crossing Outreach distributes fresh food to over 1,800 local residents each week from its Crossing Nutrition Center, which sources produce from local stores (Sam's Club, North Belt Walmart, Hy-Vee and Price Chopper) to reduce hunger and waste. The program, which has served more than 78,000 individuals in 2024, provides households with a food box after a simple registration process. KQ2
- ➤ On Jan. 30th the St. Joseph Safety and Health Council will host Safety Town: After Dark at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church—adults 18 and older will pay $75 for a ticket that includes a meal, raffle draws and games to raise funds for safety programs. KQ2
- ➤ AFL-CIO Community Services is accepting applications for its Adopt-A-Family program that connects local adopters with families in need until Christmas Eve—individuals, nonprofits, and businesses can adopt as many families as they wish. Local groups already support up to 30 families, and more adopters are encouraged to register soon. KQ2
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ St. Joseph School District held its third Finance Committee meeting Tuesday afternoon at the district office to brainstorm ways to boost revenue and cut costs. The committee focused on reviewing staff deployment, exploring local business sponsorships and grant opportunities, and evaluating the hiring justification process—meant to guide future financial decisions. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Missouri Department of Social Services announced that Missouri families will receive full November SNAP benefits today after the FY26 Appropriations Act was signed on November 12, and participants who received partial benefits will get the remainder soon. St. Joseph Post
- ➤ St. Joseph officials announced new detours after an oversize load struck the Gene Field Road bridge on Monday along I-29—MoDOT crews are assessing the bridge and advising drivers to take Gene Field Road east to Bishop Road then north to Cook Road while Woodbine Road remains closed from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.—until stabilization work is complete. - ➤ Shovels broke ground today on a 53-unit apartment complex at 4604 Rochester Road and a 10,000 square foot retail center in north St. Joseph — developers also plan two pad sites at 4700 Rochester Road with full infrastructure ready. KQ2
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The Worth County Tigers won the District 7 championship with a 48-12 win over King City Friday night in Grant City— they will play in the 8-man quarterfinals next Saturday at 1 p.m. in North Shelby. KQ2
- ➤ The St. Joseph Christian Lions won their first district title in 15 seasons when they beat Bishop LeBlond 54—38 Friday night. They will host the Rock Port Blue Jays in the quarterfinals next Saturday at 1 p.m. KQ2
- ➤ The Mid-Buchanan Dragons won back-to-back district championships—defeating the Cameron Dragons by a score of 42 to 28 in the Class 2 District 8 title game. They held Cameron scoreless in the second half—and will play in the quarterfinals against Monroe City next Saturday at 1 p.m. KQ2
