- ➤ The Bartlett Center is cutting back services as it now has less than 40% of its typical funding and staff are working up to 18-hour days—while the center supports over 200 local children and families. Executive director LaTonya Williams said the center is counting on a new state childcare subsidy model to help secure future support. KQ2
- ➤ Salvation Army's 2025 Red Kettle Campaign launched on Nov 7 and will run until Dec 23 to raise funds for programs in St. Joseph. Captain Patricia Williams and Social Services Director Emily Bravo urged community members to volunteer as bell ringers at locations (Hyvee, Hobby Lobby, Price Chopper, and Sam's Club) and help exceed last year's $100,000 (registration available on their website). - ➤ Families at Edison Elementary enjoyed a free Thanksgiving dinner that served nearly 200 families with full meals provided by local business donations—teachers, staff and volunteers prepared food and set tables by candlelight. - ➤ Turnspire Capital Partners acquired LifeLine Foods and ICM Biofuels, merging their operations under The LifeLine Group — the food division remains as LifeLine Foods while the biofuels unit is rebranded as LifeLine Biofuels. - ➤ Home Instead celebrated the move from 1009 W. Saint Maartens Drive to its new office at 502 Woodbine Road on Thursday in St. Joseph. The in-home care business (which has served the area for nine years and employs about 100 people) offers companionship, home helper, personal services, dementia care, transitional care and hospice support. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ United Way of Greater St. Joseph President Kylee Strough said that applications for the year-long Leadership St. Joseph program are accepted until 5 p.m. today and require a tuition fee of $1,850 to join a rigorous course of personal, professional and community development. The program, which began in 1982, starts with a two-day retreat in early January and caps enrollment at fewer than 30 participants—aiming to prepare future local leaders. St. Joseph Post

- ➤ The St. Joseph Fire Department is preparing its crew and equipment for colder weather. Bill Lamar said crews are testing hoses, trucks, and ladders to handle freezing water and icy roads—while reminding residents to check heating safety measures. KQ2
- ➤ Local agency InterServ lost about $400,000 in federal funding—75% less than before—and now orders fewer meals for seniors even as demand rises at its food pantry. The agency said it will change its meals program and work with In-Home Services because SNAP benefits remain on hold. KQ2

- ➤ Missouri Western State University had a busy fall sports season as its cross country team earned its first national qualifier and the women’s soccer team is fighting for a national tournament spot—while the volleyball team celebrated coach Jessica Fey’s 100th win during an 11-match win streak. MoWest faces tournament matches against Fort Hays State and Nebraska Kearney that could clinch its first MIAA crown since 2017—its football team will try to end a 3—7 season with a win on Saturday against Central Oklahoma.
