COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. Joseph Fire Department warns that holiday lights can cause injuries if wiring and extension cords are not used properly — residents are urged to check cords and use safe ladder practices. Fire investigator Andy Peterson also advised placing candles on non-heating surfaces and replacing damaged bulbs — following these tips can help avoid fires and shocks.  KQ2
  • Maximize NWMO, the regional vitality initiative from The Community Foundation of Northwest Missouri that serves 18 counties, earned bronze recognition from Communities of Excellence and Resilience — a national nonprofit that honored Florida communities with silver and gold awards.  St. Joseph Post

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Gene Field Road bridge over Interstate 29 in St. Joseph was struck by an oversized load and is closed until further notice—crews are evaluating its condition as drivers are urged to use alternate routes.  St. Joseph Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tatum Levendahl, a junior studying environmental science from St. Joseph, was chosen as the first student-researcher for Dubuque University’s Franzen Biodiversity Fellowship after conducting field surveys at Wolter Woods and Prairies over the summer — she will present her research in a poster in April at the Mississippi River Research Consortium meeting.  St. Joseph Post
  • St. Joseph School District is addressing a new Missouri law on cardiac care in schools — Lafayette High School has set up a multi-department cardiac emergency response team that holds drills twice a year to prepare for sudden incidents. The team, led by school nurse Jennifer Koch, ensures quick access to emergency help during cardiac emergencies.  KQ2
  • Haley Lindsey, Director of Financial Aid at Missouri Western State University, was named Most Valuable Professional by the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators—an honor that recognizes her 11 years in financial aid and her work supporting diverse students at the open-access institution.  KQ2
  • The St. Joseph School District Board of Education met at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 10 at the Troester Media Center — 3401 Renick St. to discuss updates to Plan E and review district projects. They broke down proposed changes to feeder systems, boundaries, staffing, finances and academics, discussed installing an incline wheelchair lift at Coleman Elementary, and considered a partnership with Avila University’s Teacher Preparation Program.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • St. Joseph City Council approved a $25,000 expenditure on Monday from the mass transit fund to buy land at 2001 and 2005 Fredrick Ave. for a new bus shelter that will replace the current one with an easier access point—Public Works Director Abe Forney said.  KQ2
  • InterServ cut funding for senior in-home and nutrition services because of the government shutdown, so seniors received congregate meals on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays starting Nov. 10 and Meals on Wheels now deliver three meals a week. The Community Center is closed on Fridays until further notice + youth programs and Mitchell Woods child care keep regular hours with the changes set to last until the end of 2025.  KQ2

  • Missouri Western State University volleyball coach Jessica Fey won her 100th match on Friday, Nov. 7—after the Griffons had not lost since Oct. 3. The win marks a key milestone in her leadership as the team continues to excel in Saint Joseph.  KQ2
