COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Second Harvest Community Food Bank is expecting high turnout at its 15th Annual Turkey Day Registration event today at 915 Douglas Street amid a looming government shutdown that could affect SNAP users—volunteers are also sought for the upcoming Distribution Day, and applicants must show ID or their orange Second Harvest card to register one household. The event will end early if spots fill up before 6 p.m.  KQ2
  • United Way of Greater St. Joseph is ending its public fundraising campaign today with plans to announce between $1½ and $2½ million in pledges and honor donors—co-chairs Michael and Jennifer Holden shared campaign highlights and thanked community supporters. The celebration begins at 5:00 p.m. in the Hall of Fame Room at Spratt Stadium, with tickets costing $20 per person or $150 for a table of eight.  St. Joseph Post
  • United Way of Greater St. Joseph received a $100,000 grant from Mosaic Life Care and Mosaic Life Care Foundation to fight food insecurity—some funds will be used to create meal kits for local families in the coming weeks.  KQ2

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Renovations are underway at the former Big Lots building on North Belt Highway to create a new Ollie's Bargain Discount store. City officials approved the permit in October—residents now see a poster on the property informing them of the upcoming business.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials announced that the Veterans Day Parade will take place on November 11 in St. Joseph with parade formation beginning at 8:30 a.m. and the main event starting at 9:30 a.m.—a schedule that includes a route starting at 22nd and Frederick. The parade will feature JROTC units, local high school bands, veteran organizations, and law enforcement agencies—offering local veterans a chance to connect with support services.  KQ2
  • The Northwest Missouri Labor Council elected Zack Dunn as president and Daniel Robinson as vice president to rebuild worker power across 11 counties. Dunn, a longtime union member from Savannah, said the new leadership will carry on former president Mike Veale’s work.  KQ2

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, the MSHSAA Girls Volleyball championships begin at Civic Arena in St. Joseph where 20 teams from all five classes will compete for the state title over the next four days—East Buchanan will face Hermann at 2 p.m. for a championship spot.  St. Joseph Post
