COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of Greater St. Joseph has posted a list of winter warming centers and emergency shelters that include Carnegie Library, Downtown Library, East Hills Library, Rolling Hills Library, Washington Park Library, The Salvation Army and a site in Savannah, along with shelters like Community Missions My Brother's House, The Salvation Army Booth Center and the YWCA Shelter. The list gives hours and phone numbers so residents in the area can get help as cold weather moves in — a key resource for local safety.  KQ2

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Missouri Western State University will reopen the Small Business Development Center in St. Joseph on January 1st after winning a contract from the Small Business Administration — Missouri Western Workforce Development Director Rebecca Lobina will oversee the center and guide local entrepreneurs with free business counseling and training.  St. Joseph Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The St. Joseph Board of Education reversed its plan to consolidate high schools and will keep all three following public hearings; Superintendent Ashly McGinnis said the board will draft Plan E—addressing staffing, boundaries, and building closures—and discuss revisions next month.  St. Joseph Post
  • The St. Joseph School District said the Benton High School girls basketball head coach position is open again for applicants (Ross Barelli, who was hired in May, is no longer set to lead the team). The school will begin a quick interview process to fill the role before the season starts on November 24th.  KQ2

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Western Reception Diagnostic Correctional Center hosted its second Veterans Suicide Awareness Walk today at the correctional facility with two scheduled walks — one in the morning and one in the afternoon — where 107 participants gathered to raise awareness for preventing veteran and staff suicide. Proceeds from T-shirt sales will benefit Warriors' Ascent in Kansas City as organizers support their Zero Suicide initiative.  KQ2
