COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ United Way of Greater St. Joseph is hosting two Caring Connection volunteer sessions to help address food insecurity & support households that may be affected by a potential suspension of SNAP benefits during a federal government shutdown. The sessions will be held on October 29 from 1-3 p.m. and October 31 from 9-11 a.m. at 118 S. 5th Street, and volunteers of all ages may join. KQ2
- ➤ InterServ joined Southside Schools at Benton to host a group Trunk or Treat that brought families together for early holiday fun and introduced available community services. The event combined efforts from several local organizations to make the celebration safer and easier for everyone. KQ2
- ➤ The YWCA and St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting this week to mark a 20-week project that changed the shelter’s 1980s locker-room bathrooms into private facilities—offering survivors greater privacy and dignity. The organization will soon begin renovating office space to further support its residents. KQ2
- ➤ Since May, food banks have lost nearly 1.6 million pounds from federal cuts and Second Harvest Community Food Bank has seen record-high calls from families and pantries in 18 counties—CEO Chad Higdon said the bank will monitor calls and plan support if a shutdown extends past November 1, which could pause SNAP benefits. - ➤ Dutch Bros Coffee has announced its first drive-thru location in St. Joseph will open at 516B North Belt Highway in early 2026—bringing specialty coffee, smoothies, freezes, and teas to local residents. KQ2
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ St. Joseph locals are invited to appear as extras in a feature film today at the Missouri Theatre with check-in beginning at 3 p.m. Director Alec Huggins and producer Thomas Cross will film indoors and outdoors until about 9 p.m. — extras should dress in business casual attire without flashy colors and may enjoy a gift card raffle at the end. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ High school students attended the Build Your Future event on Wednesday in Bethany to learn about construction and trade jobs—more than 50 schools and 30 vendors showed hands-on skills. AGCMO staff said the event aimed to show that college is not the only path to success. KQ2
- ➤ District administrators reviewed Plan E—created by Lafayette coach and teacher Jeff Leake—that would keep three high schools with fewer costs and less disruption. A final public hearing will be held Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Central High School gym and the board will decide on the district consolidation plan immediately after. KQ2
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Starting Monday, a section of Woodbine Road from Karnes to Cook will be closed from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for three weeks—city workers will stabilize the bank and drivers are urged to use alternate routes. KQ2
- ➤ At the October 13th city council meeting, officials accepted a $99,137 Continuum of Care Planning grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to fund services for homeless individuals in St Joseph. City consultants worked with planners to review applications, update policies and provide technical support to improve residents' quality of life. KQ2
