COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ AFL-CIO Community Services in St. Joseph is preparing for its Adopt-A-Family program to help families needing Christmas support. Applications will be available from November 3 through December 5 and must be returned by 5 p.m. on December 8 (with different processing fee options and Spanish applicants needing to call by appointment). - ➤ Uncle Fester's Costume Closet at Rolling Hills Library Belt Branch will offer free Halloween costumes for children on Saturday, October 18 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.—the branch at 1904 North Belt Highway is also taking costume donations to help families save on Halloween expenses. KQ2
- ➤ After National Hispanic Heritage Month ended, local Hispanic business owners shared how they built up their businesses to help the community. La Mesa, started in 1993 by a family from Guadalajara (who once worked in a Mexican restaurant), grew from its Saint Joseph origins to nine locations in Omaha while Tienda La Estrella, began in 2007 (from a small store), moved to a larger site to serve local shoppers. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The St. Joseph Symphony will perform Frankenstein—It’s Live on Saturday at the Missouri Theater with a live orchestra playing Michael Shapiro’s score from the 1931 film. Patrons can join a preconcert reception at 6 p.m. to dress in costume and enjoy complimentary wine. St. Joseph Post
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The St. Joseph School District Foundation surprised nine school employees with the 2025 Apple Seed Grants during a surprise visit at schools. More than $18,000 in funds will support classroom projects and school-wide improvements—promising extra learning opportunities for students. KQ2
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Today, The Human Bean at 4414 Commons Drive in St. Joseph hosts Coffee for a Cure from 5 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.—all sales and tips will be donated and matched by Mosaic Life Care to support local breast cancer patients as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month that stresses early detection through screenings and self-exams.
