COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Krug Park Castle is closed as its $11.75 million renovation continues, with workers gutting and rebuilding the interior while adding dressing rooms—vendor space and an elevator for improved accessibility. E. L. Crawford Construction expects to complete the upgrades by fall, funded by a half-cent park sales tax approved in 2021. St. Joseph Post
- ➤ Friends of the Animal Shelter has refreshed its look with a modern logo as its new shelter is under construction on South Belt Highway next to the city recycling center—the updated image is also used on merchandise to raise funds for the non-profit. St. Joseph Post
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Missouri Department of Conservation will hold a hunter education skills session at its Northwest Regional Office at 701 James McCarthy Drive in St. Joseph on Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m.—participants aged 11 and older must complete the online knowledge portion or bring a manual booklet for free review. - ➤ Missouri Western State University celebrated the ribbon cutting of the Dr. George S. Richmond Student Collaboration Center in Potter Hall with many family members present and digital animation major Kylee Derr said the new space will let students work together on projects & share meals, with the facility made possible by a donation from Tom and Judy Richmond. - ➤ Herzog hosted a career day today for high school students in St. Joseph where over 30 stations introduced roles from fieldwork to office work—recruiting manager Heidi Sweeney said the event was meant to spark interest in trade skills, with many students especially drawn to solar panel displays. - ➤ St. Joseph School District officials posted documents that compare staffing impacts for two school reorganization models ahead of a public hearing on Oct. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at Benton High School Auditorium. The Lafayette and Central model would affect 13 administrators, 261 certified and 153 classified staff and displace 3,878 students while the Benton, Hyde and Central model would affect 15 administrators, 308 certified and 212 classified staff and displace 4,257 students. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The St. Joseph Fire Department is using new software (First-In Fire Station Alerting) funded by ARPA to alert the closest station faster. This system sends computerized voice calls with backup methods to help firefighters reduce response times and lower local home insurance rates. KQ2
- ➤ The City of St. Joseph announced that the City Hall parking lot was closed starting Thursday at 5 p.m. through today for milling—customers were directed to use parking on the east and west sides and nearby streets. The parking lot will close again for overlay, painting, and curb replace from October 15 at 5 p.m. through October 17. KQ2
