- ➤ The YWCA hosted its annual 'Hear My Voice' event in St. Joseph this week to honor domestic violence survivors and offer a space for sharing personal experiences and art — the ceremony also presented the Mary Jolly Award to Sergeant Tami Parson and Natalie Maupin for their community efforts. KQ2
- ➤ A winning Show Me Cash lottery ticket was sold at Hy-Vee Gas station in St. Joseph+ Missouri Lottery officials confirmed its value at $167,000. KQ2
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Performing Arts Association announced an inaugural Downtown Wreath Parade where community members can design free holiday wreaths from October 1 through December 1 — the event will include drop-offs, voting, and winning season tickets while raising funds to support local performing arts. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Following a 40-minute lockdown at Benton High and Hyde Elementary on Sept. 25, the district said an anonymous, angry call led to the decision to secure the schools for safety. Dr. Shannon Nolte explained that the resource officer and principal coordinated the response— and the district will use the debrief to improve its future drills. KQ2
- ➤ MoWest President Dr. Elizabeth Kennedy recalled meeting former Missouri Western State University president Dr. Marvin Looney on July 21—an unexpected encounter that deeply influenced her view on the school's mission. Dr. Looney passed away at age 97 on Sept. 29 and was honored during homecoming week as his legacy continues to guide the institution. KQ2
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The St. Joseph Sports Commission reported the marathon set a new record with 635 registrants — including 100 marathoners, 210 half marathoners, over 150 10kers, roughly 150 5kers and virtual participants — with runners from 20 states and two countries and seven Boston qualifiers, including overall winner William Henry who finished in 2:45.
