EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lindbergh Elementary is asking for community volunteers to read to 2nd graders every Wednesday this fall—onboarding is on Oct. 1 at 10:40 a.m., and reading sessions will run from 10:40 to 11:40 a.m. every week from Oct. 8 through Dec. 17.  KQ2
  • At the Sept. 22 meeting, SJSD administrator Mark Korell said the board is exploring a two-high school plan as falling enrollment has created staffing and curriculum challenges—he reached out to Wetzel County in West Virginia for guidance on downsizing.  KQ2

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Missouri Department of Conservation is hosting open houses for deer management that let hunters, landowners, and wildlife watchers learn about white-tailed deer, CWD, and land management between 4 and 8 p.m. with one event held today at the Stoney Creek Conference Center (in St. Joseph) and another on October 1 at the Litton Agri-Science Learning Center in Chillicothe, and public comments will be accepted online through October 17.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new state law that has not gone into effect will crack down on stunt driving in St. Joseph by clearly adding penalties—first offense as a Class B misdemeanor, second as a Class A misdemeanor, and later offenses or those involving injuries as felonies—aimed at ending street takeovers.  St. Joseph Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • Field Pointe Assisted Living in St. Joseph offers guidance for families deciding on senior care — Administrator Becky Hampton explains that evaluating care options like independent living, assisted living, or memory care and checking if residents and staff are happy is key. The facility recommends touring the center and keeping regular visits to help ease the transition.  KQ2
