CULTURE NEWS

  • St. Joseph Museums will bring history to life during Voices of the Past at Mt. Mora Cemetery, with actors portraying famous entertainment figures at the Wyeth Tootle Mansion on October 2nd and 3rd at 6, 7, and 8 p.m. Jerrad Hardin will portray John Wilkes Booth—highlighting a local historical connection—while tickets cost $30 for general admission or $27 for museum and preservation members.  St. Joseph Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Rosecrans Memorial Airport, the 139th Airlift Wing hosted a career fair for high school and trade school students this week, offering both military and civilian career paths for National Guard service. Jake Gard (a junior at Nodaway Holt) said he learned how to use a tourniquet, and recruiters reported strong student engagement.  KQ2
  • St. Joseph School District officials said they will shift to a two-high school model because enrollment has dropped below 10,000, and they are reviewing both a Lafayette-Central model and a Benton-Central model that would use the Hyde Elementary building (Benton is the smallest facility). They will make a recommendation at the next work session and the October board meeting.  St. Joseph Post
  • The St. Joseph School District Foundation hosted its second annual Community Breakfast to honor community partners and student success—presenting the Beacon Award to Missouri Western State University President Dr. Elizabeth Kennedy and the Trailblazer Award to SJSD alum Kristie Arthur while announcing a $25,000 workforce-readiness grant to support the Hillyard Technical Center Apprenticeship Program.  KQ2

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local officials explained that dead fish appeared in Krug Park Lagoon after an algae bloom reduced oxygen in the water — the Missouri Department of Conservation said that seasonal changes and cloudy weather caused the bloom and that shutting off the fountain for renovations did not create a chemical hazard. They added that the lagoon will naturally recover as the seasons change.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Representative Shields ended her senate campaign because she must have cardiac surgery soon and her neurologist warned that running for office raises her stroke risk—she said her family must come first and she will continue serving in the House until the General Assembly meets in January.  KQ2
  • On Wednesday evening, the Persisterhood of St. Joseph held a meeting at the Rolling Hills Library upstairs via Zoom—discussing signs of fascism in politics and recruiting voters for the Respect Mo Voters petition that seeks to keep ballot measures unchanged. Dr. Nancy Zeliff and a co-facilitator led the session as the group responded to lawmakers overturning previous amendments.  KQ2
