COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of Greater St. Joseph partnered with Pizza Shoppe for its Dine and Donate event, where 10% of dine-in and carryout orders will help raise funds for local nonprofits and boost its annual campaign — Pizza Shoppe closes at 9 p.m. today.  KQ2
  • Last Saturday, participants at the Andrew County Aquatics Initiative Splash Bash raised nearly $60,000—exceeding their $50,000 goal—as a key first step toward a new pool facility to replace Savannah’s over-60-year-old pool. Chairperson Diane Gould said the group will soon apply for a $500,000 grant with matching funds, though additional money is needed for the planned $4.5M project.  St. Joseph Post
  • The Community Read for St. Joseph has launched its second annual program that will begin Saturday—selecting Matt Haig’s 'The Midnight Library' to draw residents into shared reading, with 300 physical books already given out and eBook and audiobook versions also available.  KQ2

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Sept. 11, many locals gathered at Wyatt Park Baptist Church in St. Joseph to honor Vietnam Veteran POWs and those missing in action with museum displays and local performances. Retired U.S. Air Force Captain Guy Gruters shared his POW experiences and ticket sales benefited Cameron Veterans Home—providing a fitting tribute to a challenging past.  KQ2

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Robidoux Middle School in St. Joseph has set up a 9/11 memorial exhibit in its library that shows real artifacts, newspaper clippings, and a list of names of those who died in the attacks. Library Media Specialist Melissa Corey said the display helps students learn history as personal stories—linking it with the school's Holocaust education program.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Missouri Department of Transportation crews finished deck repairs and reopened the Buchanan County Route AC bridge on Thursday morning—after several days of work. A replacement project is scheduled for 2027—part of the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program.  KQ2
  • Today, the St. Joseph Emergency Management team urges residents to build an emergency kit for 96 hours and make a plan in case of fall weather dangers such as cold fronts, thunder & lightning. Emergency Management Director Bill Brinton said the kit should include a flashlight, jumper cables, nonperishable snacks, a tool kit and a blanket.  KQ2
  • St. Joseph native Marty Novak, who has served on the city council since 2018, is seeking reelection for the at-large position today. He said he improved streets, parks, and the airport and will work on new housing and school projects if reelected — his plan to make our community even better.  KQ2
  • The St. Joseph Fire Department hosted its annual memorial to honor those lost on 9/11—bringing together first responders and community members to remember the attack. Fire Chief Ivan Klippenstein led the ceremony for the first time, urging unity and reflection on the sacrifices made.  KQ2

SPORTS NEWS

  • MSHSAA honored Stanberry Girls Track and Field Coach Shane Hilton by naming him the 2024-25 MSHSAA/NFHS Girls Track and Field Coach of the Year — his Bulldogs placed third at the Class 1 State Championships in May.  KQ2
  • On Wednesday night, the Bishop LeBlond Eagles beat the North Andrew Cardinals 11-1 with five players registering hits—Brynna Miller and Presley Miljavic were key in the win; the Eagles will face the North Platte Panthers on Saturday morning in the Benton Tournament.  KQ2
