COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The United Way of Greater St. Joseph started its annual campaign last week and raised nearly $1 million through its pacesetter effort. President Kylee Strough said volunteers and staff will reach out to local businesses over the next two months to build support for the campaign.  St. Joseph Post
  • Today the YMCA in St. Joseph hosts its 74th Annual Y-Fry Reunion where local men who learned to cook since 1949 join together to raise funds and support ongoing cooking programs—linking past graduates with new participants. This event highlights a long-standing community tradition that continues to strengthen local cooking skills.  KQ2

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two teens, including 16-year-old Haylee Roles, were injured in a rollover crash in Atchison just after 10:30 p.m. on Monday when a speeding 2001 Lexus lost control on Commercial Street, struck a concrete wall then a metal railing before overturning—both the driver and a 15-year-old passenger were ejected and taken by EMS to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph.  St. Joseph Post

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Kevin Ginn, owner of Do It A'Ginn Event Center, purchased the 120-year-old building on South 18th and Messanie to create a welcoming space in Midtown. His plans will change the negative view of the corridor and bring people together in the area.  KQ2

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Trees in the area will soon turn fall colors because shorter days and cooler weather stop the trees from making chlorophyll—revealing red, orange and yellow hues hidden all summer. The change is expected in October with peak colors around Halloween.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor John Josendale picked up his reelection petitions Tuesday to run for another term after being elected in April 2022. Petitions must be filed with city clerk from October 7 to October 28 and the primary election for mayor, council and judge will be held on February 3.  KQ2

SPORTS NEWS

  • Central High School football team was named the Anderson Auto Group Team of the Week after a 43—6 win over Benton High on September 7th at Spratt Memorial Stadium. The team improved to 2—0 and will face Grandview on September 12th.  KQ2
