COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency confirmed that remains of 22-year-old Army Sgt. Simon Garelick from St. Joseph, forced to endure the brutal Bataan Death March after his capture on April 9th and who died on November 4th, have been positively identified using dental and anthropological analysis—restoring a part of local history.  St. Joseph Post

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A vehicle crashed into the front of the Subway at 6101 Lake Avenue on the south side on Monday at 1:51 p.m.—two people were injured, and one was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.  St. Joseph Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The St. Joseph School District Board of Education is moving forward with a feeder system that plans to use Benton/Hyde and Central as the district’s two high schools—if the plan moves forward, Lafayette will become a middle school; Dr. Ashly McGinnis said the board will refine the proposal with updated visuals and numbers from the Sept. 8 meeting. The district is weighing five options while keeping upgrades minimal in order to stay within its budget.  KQ2
  • Superintendent Ashly McGinnis visited several schools on the first day of the new school year and reported strong energy and many positive changes in the district — she signed an agreement with Missouri Western to ease enrollment for students and hopes this momentum lasts until February.  St. Joseph Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After a three-month probe into a network breach that began on June 9th, city officials said about 11,000 residents’ personal information might be at risk. Affected individuals will receive letters in the next 14 days with instructions for free credit monitoring services—officials are working to strengthen system security.  KQ2
  • St. Joseph City Council approved demolishing the slides and lap pool at Aquatic Park on Noyes Boulevard so workers can finish upgrading the lazy river and splash pad. Councilmember Madison Davis said the decision follows an agreement with the YMCA to build a new indoor pool at North Village Shoppes—designed for year-round use.  St. Joseph Post

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • DW Development responded today to residents' complaints about unsafe living conditions at Gene Field Apartments by completing urgent repairs to plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems and increasing on-site support. The management said they will work with the Missouri Housing Development Commission (MHDC) to secure a 9% LIHTC award (to fund a full renovation) and continue making improvements.  KQ2
