EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new St. Joseph School District report showed that students scored at proficient or advanced levels in English, math, science and social studies with increases of 1.5 to 4 percent from 2023 to 2025. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The St. Joseph Fire Department received nearly $117,000 from the Missouri Department of Economic Development to build a live fire training facility near Rosecrans Memorial Airport—this facility will help the department and regional partners train more effectively and is expected to be completed by May.  KQ2
  • A nearly $1 million state grant is modernizing the St. Joseph Communication Center by shifting its outdated copper 9-1-1 system to VOIP—serving police, the sheriff’s office, fire, and EMS from Buchanan County. Work began this month and will be finished early next year.  St. Joseph Post
  • DeKalb County and four other counties filed a lawsuit against the Missouri Tax Commission to challenge an order that forces local officials to raise property assessments by up to 110%—a steep increase that could burden small business owners and residents. County leaders say the order is unfair because many tax levies are already set and its late timing might push counties past state deadlines.  St. Joseph Post
  • St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce President Natalie Hawn met with state officials at the Missouri State Fair to urge the upgrade of C-130 jets for the 139th Airlift Wing at Rosecrans Memorial Airport. Hawn said the new jets are essential for local security and to support civilian services at the airport—she emphasized that continued advocacy is needed.  St. Joseph Post
  • Crews will begin concrete repair and replacement work on Stockyards Expressway on September 2 — traffic will be reduced to two lanes between Lower Lake Road and Bluff View Road for about one month as part of an ongoing $240,000 project.  KQ2
