EDUCATION NEWS

  • A local parent raised concerns that bus schedules arrived too late for her nonverbal child with special needs just before school starts—leaving no time to adjust the routine. The St. Joseph School District said it is working on accommodations as First Student finalizes routes amid families still enrolling.  KQ2

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Commissioner Ron Hook said final soil samples were collected Monday as part of efforts to restore Lake Contrary—which now resembles a field with little water after herbicide treatment—and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will review the results to determine if dredging can begin. The 16-year project aims to revive the lake for community benefit.  St. Joseph Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MoDOT is delaying stage one of its improvement project at U.S. Route 59 and Alabama Street because a softer subgrade was found under the old pavement—work is ongoing with stage one now set to finish by the end of 2025 and the full project expected to complete in spring 2027.  KQ2
  • St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce President Natalie Hawn stumped for the 139th Airlift Wing at the State Fair and urged that outdated C-130H cargo planes be replaced with new J model planes so the National Guard is ready to respond to disasters. Hawn said the upgrade is needed to keep the wing functioning as a key local employer and provider of essential services.  St. Joseph Post
  • On August 21, the St. Joseph Police Department held a ceremony to honor about 20 officers for promotions received since 2023—Kylee Van Meter, now the school resource officer supervisor, and James Edwards, newly promoted to sergeant, were among those celebrated.  KQ2
  • Some St. Joseph sewer customers are receiving calls from city representatives after a processing error debited their auto-pay accounts three weeks early for the September bill, and officials are discussing options for refunds or letting the early payment cover the bill (amounts range from $10 to $100).  KQ2
  • The St. Joseph Public Library received a $13,345 grant from the Offices of Denny Hoskins (the Missouri Secretary of State) to replace 19 outdated staff computers and improve its network. The grant is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (under the Library Services and Technology Act).  KQ2

HEALTH NEWS

  • This August, local health officials urge families to update immunizations as children return to school. Interim Clinic Supervisor Kristi Billings said missed vaccines during COVID have led to reemerging illnesses such as measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella+ and she urged residents to contact a doctor for guidance+.  KQ2
