GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Monday night’s council meeting, investor Steven Craig questioned city officials over the process behind the airport bid for fixed base operator services at Rosecrans Memorial Airport and said his bid was overlooked. He claimed that after his team originally won, changes in voting led to a plan that only updates an old facility instead of building a modern hangar—potentially reducing economic benefits for the city.  KQ2
  • Retired St. Joseph Police Department detective Paul Gatewood announced he will run for state representative in District 10, a seat held by Bill Falkner until 2026—Gatewood has worked with Falkner for years and will launch his campaign with a party in September.  KQ2
  • At Monday night's City Council meeting, Steven Craig questioned the fixed-base operator lease for Apex Aero Center at Rosecrans Memorial Airport. He argued that simply redoing the aging facility will not meet modern aviation needs—he proposed building a new 45,000 square foot hangar to attract both local and out-of-town pilots.  KQ2

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health insurers in our area have asked regulators for permission to raise premiums next year—one company asking for a 40% increase while Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City is the only carrier planning to lower rates. The changes linked to expiring tax credits and new CMS rules will likely make coverage more expensive and trim enrollment.  St. Joseph Post

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Multiple residents at Gene Field Apartments in St. Joseph have raised concerns about water leaks and bug infestations that make their homes unsafe, and they say management has not responded to repair requests (DW Development is yet to address the issues). Tenant advocates expect the management to act soon to restore safe living conditions.  KQ2
