COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents can enjoy tea and cuddle kittens today from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the annual Kit-tea event held at 617 Felix Street in downtown St. Joseph, organized by Alchemy Tea Co. and St. Joseph’s Friends of the Animal Shelter—special drinks will benefit the shelter and kittens that capture hearts will be available for adoption tomorrow on a first come, first served basis.  St. Joseph Post

CRIME NEWS

  • A St. Joseph couple—Christopher C. Cash, 35, and Crystal L. Cash, 43—was arrested Thursday in Atchison after police connected them to theft using warrants from Nodaway and Doniphan counties.  St. Joseph Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The St. Joseph School District is starting the new school year with a revised mission, vision and values to show its belief in local students and the community. Superintendent Dr. Ashly McGinnis said the plan—'We Believe in St. Joseph'—will unite families and staff as part of its Portrait of a Graduate initiative.  KQ2
  • North Central Missouri College in Savannah offered a basic non-degree welding program with 80 hours of instruction that covered welding safety, OSHA10 certification and hands-on practice+ the course ended with a college-sponsored job fair connecting students with job opportunities.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The MacArthur Drive Bridge is now open to two-lane traffic as work nears completion after extensive repairs that began in May. The $2.9 million project replaced the concrete deck and steel supports, added a new railing, sidewalk, and fencing — and occasional lane closures will occur until the work wraps up by the end of August.  KQ2
  • The City of St. Joseph said that after a local couple raised concerns about play area accessibility, all playground equipment meets ADA standards—while the city will look for ways to improve accessible routes and surfacing in parks.  KQ2
  • The Buchanan County Sheriff's Office is increasing patrols in school zones and along bus routes as students return next week, Captain Mike Hess said—officers will closely watch for speeding and failure to stop for school buses. This measure aims to remind drivers of reduced speed limits and bus stop rules at the start of the school year.  St. Joseph Post
  • U.S. Representative Sam Graves recognized St. Joseph native Claire Phillips for completing her summer internship in his Kansas City District Office where she handled phone calls and researched legislative issues during a historic time in Congress. Phillips, a National Merit Scholar at the University of Missouri, was honored for her prompt contributions.  KQ2
