COMMUNITY NEWS

  • FOTAS and Alchemy host their annual Kit-tea event downtown today from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at 617 Felix St.—guests can sip tea while cuddling shelter kittens and supporting local animal shelter programs.  KQ2
  • Commerce Bank's Ashland Avenue location in St. Joseph was busy this afternoon when hometown MLB star Noah Cameron visited to launch the Helping Kids Take the Field donation drive for the local Pony Express Baseball program + donors can drop off new or gently used equipment during bank hours.  KQ2

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Albrecht Kemper Museum of Art opened a new exhibition—Above the Fruited Plain—that shows works by St. Joseph born artist Jacqueline Bishop and is free to visit today from 4 to 7pm. Bishop grew up here and will speak with visitors at the opening and host an artist talk on Saturday from 1 to 2 pm.  St. Joseph Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hosea Elementary School in St. Joseph unveiled its new expansion—adding three classrooms and a flexible activity center that will host community events and family activities—to improve learning spaces. Principal Justin McCarthy said the upgrade follows a bond issue passed in April and is set to benefit staff and students for the upcoming school year.  KQ2
  • Missouri Western will begin its fall semester on August 25 and will welcome new and returning students with walk-in registration on August 20, an orientation called Griffon Edge on August 22 and 23, and a series of Welcome Week events including Western Warmup on the 27th—the school also will host Family Day on September 13 and a football game against Missouri S&T at 6 p.m.  St. Joseph Post
  • St. Joseph School District announced its upcoming Time to Unplug Policy that will ban personal cell phones during class for the 2025-2026 school year to support a distraction-free learning environment. Director of Student Services Dr. Shannon Nolte said the policy follows Senate Bill 68—signed by Governor Mike Kehoe in July—and the updated handbook outlines the new procedures.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the St. Joseph Housing Authority began demolition at a property near its office to clear space for new one- or two-bedroom units for low-income families, seniors, disabled individuals, and veterans — tenants were given 90 days to leave and provided housing vouchers. Executive Director Jeff Penlend said they will soon consult with architects and a private partner to develop up to 60 mixed income units.  KQ2
  • Missouri Department of Corrections helps incarcerated mothers at Vandalia and Chillicothe facilities care for their babies and learn parenting skills while serving their sentences. Nursery Program Manager Perkins said infants can stay for up to eighteen months — the program may expand statewide with more support in the future.  KQ2

HEALTH NEWS

  • St. Joseph Safety and Health Council urged drivers to stop fully when school buses with students halt and warned children to keep a safe distance until the driver opens the door — noting that many school buses now have cameras to check that drivers obey the law. The council said its aim is to prevent accidents as the school year approaches.  KQ2
