COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Three friends, Terra James, Kari Prewitt and Molly Schwarz, formed Knot-4-Profit after meeting a young girl undergoing cancer treatment and now plan to help nonprofits in St. Joseph and nearby communities. Their upcoming events include Pickleball for Hope (September 13 at Parkway Distillery) and the Krug Castle Challenge (October 25 at Krug Park) as they work to boost community fundraising efforts.  KQ2
  • United Way of Greater St. Joseph hosted the Pacesetter Rally where organizations and companies tracked fundraising from workplace campaigns. The official campaign kickoff will take place on September 4 at 7:30 a.m. at The Metropolitan, and campaign director Renita Neville said the rally adds energy to the campaign efforts.  KQ2

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Ed Wiebe, longtime meat manager at Hy-Vee on North Belt Highway, was honored with the 2024 Hy-Vee Legendary Customer Service Award for forty years of service — he advised that being friendly to each customer builds strong relationships.  KQ2

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Joseph School District officials announced plans for the 2025-2026 school year that include 50 air-conditioned buses—8 of which will serve sports and activity routes—and drivers for every bus route. They held a press conference on August 13 to explain these changes.  KQ2
  • At a press conference on August 13th, SJSD officials confirmed that all certified teaching positions have been filled for the fall semester and announced new events and support programs for novice teachers to address retention concerns.  KQ2
  • The St. Joseph School District said its HVAC renovations are progressing well for the new academic year. Central High School’s system is nearly complete and ready for fall while Edison and Mark Twain Elementary schools have temporary cooling units installed—district officials expect permanent work to finish in the coming weeks.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MoDOT is inviting the public to review its draft High-Priority Unfunded Needs list—identifying $1.1 billion in annual unfunded transportation needs—as part of its update to long-range transportation plans. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 26 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Northwest District Office Conference Center and the draft document is available online through September 11.  KQ2

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Freudenthal Center for Parkinson's Disease held its 4th annual Unite and Fight Gala Tuesday night at Stoney Creek Hotel to support free access for Parkinson's treatment through exercise classes and support services. Co-founder Tara Patterson said the event is vital for people living with Parkinson's.  KQ2
