COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of St. Joseph is hosting Garage Sale Weekend today through Sunday, and residents can host sales at their home without needing a permit from City Hall. The event rules limit sales to the house, garage, or driveway and restrict sale signs—guidelines that will not apply outside this special weekend.  KQ2

CRIME NEWS

  • Police Chief Paul Luster said the 2024 Annual Report shows that while homicides, rapes, and motor vehicle thefts dropped since 2023, aggravated assault and burglary slightly increased—he added the department will keep using data to direct resources and urged residents to report suspicious activity.  KQ2

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The St. Joseph School Resource Officer Program will continue to provide safety and mentorship for students in the upcoming school year. Chief Paul Luster said the program aims to build community ties—plans include more formalized youth engagement initiatives.  KQ2
  • Buchanan County R-IV School District passed a $2 million bond on August 5 after a clerical error in the April election forced a re-run of the ballot issue. The bond received approval from 218 votes out of 237 cast (91.98% approval) across four precincts.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The St. Joseph Fire Department is urging homeowners to install Knox Boxes, which use a specialized key to let first responders access a property quickly and help reduce extra damage—Assistant Fire Chief Jamey McVicker said roughly 300 boxes are in place in the city.  KQ2
  • The St. Joseph Fire Department is planning a smoke detector program to offer free detectors to eligible families and is seeking a business partner. Assistant Fire Chief Jamey McVicker said the program will keep families safe during emergencies — a critical step in prevention — as plans are finalized.  KQ2
