COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in St. Joseph donated more than 20,000 school supplies and over $2,000 during the 17th annual Stuff the Bus campaign by Greater St. Joseph United Way— the supplies will be distributed to children in need through partner agencies like the Salvation Army on August 7.  St. Joseph Post

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 35-year-old St. Joseph woman died after being run over by a semi tractor-trailer on I-29 in Buchanan County in the early morning on Sunday; the driver, a 50-year-old man from Papillion, Nebraska, was involved in the incident.  St. Joseph Post

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Clean Alchemy owner Karyn Morrow created a Taylor Swift window display on Frederick Avenue that mimics the Folklore set with a moss-covered house and piano, and she will donate it to support the Noyes Home for Children's Take a Seat event. The set will be auctioned starting September 10—its sale taking place on September 13 at Missouri Western State University's Fulkerson Center.  KQ2

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Joseph School Superintendent Ashly McGinnis said the district is planning a two high school system even though a public survey showed split support. The Board of Education is reviewing options that pair Central with either Lafayette or Benton as the district addresses low enrollment and staffing challenges.  St. Joseph Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • August is Emergency Management Awareness Month and local officials urge residents to prepare for emergencies by having extra medicine, sturdy shoes, and a safe plan ready—Bill Brinton, Buchanan County’s Emergency Management Director, noted that weather sirens are meant for those outdoors during severe storms. This advice comes as communities face natural disasters like wildfires, severe storms, tornadoes, and hurricanes.  KQ2
  • County officials said Friday morning that donations from a trust fund and the Ag Expo Board helped fund a new building at the old East Buchanan Middle School for the Buchanan County Fairgrounds project. The project will break ground in the coming weeks and construction will start in October.  KQ2
  • County commissioners approved a housing development project near Mid-Buchanan School on July 30 despite public pushback. They said the development—featuring homes expected to cost between $400,000 and $600,000 on two-acre lots—will address population decline while keeping taxes low.  KQ2
  • Gov. Kehoe appointed James Bagley, a Maryville man and CEO of United Electric Cooperative, to the Missouri Health Facilities Review Committee today. He brings experience from work at electric cooperatives and service in the Navy and Department of Energy—adding valuable expertise to the panel.  St. Joseph Post
