- ➤ United Way of Greater St. Joseph is hosting its annual STUFF THE BUS! school supplies drive at two Walmart locations this weekend. Volunteers will collect items today from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and the donated supplies will be distributed through partner agencies including The Salvation Army + United Way programs. - ➤ The Missouri Department of Conservation and the Glore Psychiatric Museum will host the free Unwind Like a Caveman event on Monday, August 11—offering activities at Corby Grove Park from 6-8 p.m. that include a new shelter house dedication at Corby Pond and a discussion on the One Health initiative, with opportunities for nature-based stress relief. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ St. Joseph School District cash reserves fell to 10% at the end of the fiscal year on June 30 as state and local revenues sagged, falling short of the 20% board goal, according to Assistant Superintendent Robert Hedgecorth. He said that if federal funding had arrived before the deadline the reserve would have been closer to 16% — a result still below the target — and officials will review expenses if revenues decline further. - ➤ During Monday night's meeting, the SJSD Board of Education approved two new committees—academic and finance—with seven community members each to guide district decisions. Board members said the committees will bring community insight to support student success. KQ2
- ➤ The St. Joseph Symphony and YWCA launched the Beginning Adventures in Classical Harmony (BACH) program today to help young children learn about music and express their feelings. The program will expand to local childcare and early learning centers soon. KQ2
