COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The St. Joseph Police Department and local first responders will take part in the 2025 National Night Out event at Civic Center Park on Tuesday, August 5th from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sponsored by Target and the St. Joseph Goats, the event will offer free food, activities, and live music by local group The Arsonists—whose guitarist Michael Werner honors his father's service as a first responder.  KQ2

CRIME NEWS

  • Kansas City Chiefs’ wide receiver Rashee Rice was sentenced to five years probation and a 30-day jail term for causing a six-vehicle crash that injured seven people on a Dallas highway in March 2024 (he will report to training camp in St. Joseph on Monday while the NFL reviews further disciplinary action).  KQ2

CULTURE NEWS

  • Author Laurie Gwen Shapiro spent five years researching Amelia Earhart and will headline an event at the Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum today at 10 a.m. in Atchison as her new biography reveals Earhart's true accomplishments and her influential marriage to publisher George Putnam.  St. Joseph Post

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Remington Nature Center is set to reveal its bee observation hive today after five years of being closed. The hive, donated by Williams Honey of Wathena, opens at 10 a.m. for visitors with a live reveal at noon and coloring stations for children and adults.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • St. Joseph hired two civilian parking enforcement officers to patrol city streets and ticket vehicles that do not meet ordinance rules. The officers started a few weeks ago and will soon patrol full time in marked cars—distinct from police vehicles.  KQ2
  • Governor Mike Kehoe signed Senate Bill 133 to update Missouri's Underground Facility and Damage Prevention Act. The law gives contractors and excavators extra planning flexibility and now requires detectable location devices for safe digging + changes liability rules to put the burden on those who give inaccurate information.  KQ2
  • Buchanan County Emergency Management Services said residents in Northwest Missouri need not worry about flooding as officials closely monitor weather, water levels & river levees following heavy rains in Texas. They will alert locals with evacuation instructions and shelter locations if conditions change.  KQ2
