ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday afternoon, St. Joseph firefighters responded to a house fire at South 19th and Olive where they contained the blaze but could not save the dog inside—no other injuries were reported as the investigation continues.  St. Joseph Post
  • An early morning fire at The Meadows Apartments displaced several families when a blaze broke out around 3:00 a.m.—St. Joseph Fire Department crews responded in four minutes and fought the fire while local police coordinated evacuations—and the Red Cross opened a shelter for those in need.  KQ2

EDUCATION NEWS

  • InspireU Children's Discovery Center in downtown St. Joseph opened six months ago and welcomed 49,663 visitors, nearly meeting its target of 60,000 yearly admissions. Director Katherine Patterson Paronto said the center offers a space where families relax and play together — a quality uniquely supported by our community.  St. Joseph Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe announced that the Missouri Blue Scholarship will award recipients $6,000 each after a $1 million funding boost. The program has given over $4.49 million to more than 500 recipients (the maximum benefit) and Recruitment Officer Ethan Miles (from St. Joseph Police) said it helps new recruits find their starting station.  KQ2
  • A rezoning plan for a patch of land near Mid-Buchanan RV school in Faucett was rejected by the Buchanan County Planning and Zoning Board on July 9—local residents voiced concerns about traffic and the nearby school, and both the housing subdivision and minor subdivision proposals failed. The plan would have allowed five homes to be built on agricultural land.  KQ2
  • Governor Mike Kehoe signed a bill that ended Missouri’s practice of using foster kids’ Social Security benefits to cover care costs— the law also bans child marriage for those under 18 and voids nondisclosure agreements in child sexual abuse cases.  St. Joseph Post
  • The Missouri Department of Transportation announced it will resurface a section of Interstate 229 from Missouri Route 371 to I-29 in St. Joseph starting Monday, July 14. Crews will remove and fill concrete from the roadway, shoulders, and ramps—narrowing the road to one lane during work that is scheduled to finish in October.  KQ2
  • St. Joseph city officials and councilmembers are reviewing survey results from over 600 responses to address citizen concerns about code enforcement, which residents say affects property values. City Manager Mike Schumacher said the departments will work on a 24-page plan to educate owners on property responsibilities and hold them accountable during upcoming council meetings.  St. Joseph Post
