COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the Vintage and Makers Market returns to St. Joseph at Mokaska Coffee, where more than 15 local vendors will sell thrifted clothing and vintage goods from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A People’s Market will follow from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Madison McKinley (the organizer) said the event offers unique finds that support sustainable fashion.  KQ2
  • Westlake Ace Hardware in St. Joseph held its annual fan drive and raised $1,020.47 from customer donations, with 62 fans loaded to be given to the Salvation Army to help families who cannot afford air conditioning. Salvation Army Social Services Director Emily Bravo said the donated fans will help keep more local homes safe & cool as they address a critical need.  St. Joseph Post
  • Last week, Friends of the Animal Shelter broke ground on the new animal shelter on the south belt highway near the city recycling center — a project delayed by high pandemic costs and an aging 50-year-old facility, with the new shelter set to open in June next year.  St. Joseph Post

  • Kristen's Coin and Jewelry announced its partnership with The Goats & will design championship rings if the team wins its division. At today's home game, one fan will receive a football-shaped two-carat diamond valued at $2,500.  KQ2

CRIME NEWS

  • Mosaic Life Care said patient personal identification may have been compromised when hackers broke into the Oracle Health—Cerner data migration service—using stolen credentials as early as January; the company is mailing letters and offering free identity monitoring to affected patients.  St. Joseph Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Former superintendent Gabe Edgar said education in St. Joseph must change to help teachers and students meet new challenges, noting that staffing shortages and language differences create hurdles in the classroom. He stressed that schools need individualized plans to steer students toward college or technical training and that the community must work together to support these changes.  St. Joseph Post
  • The University of Missouri Board of Curators met Thursday morning at the St. Joseph Country Club to review plans for affordable, high-quality education and to discuss the Missouri Research Reactor Project—expected to boost research, create jobs, and support cancer-fighting drug components. The board also highlighted strong graduation rates and positive campus experiences as part of its strategy.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The intersection at North 22nd Street and Frederick Avenue is fully open today — announced on City of St. Joseph social media — as part of a traffic signal upgrade project that will add new lights at four more key intersections.  KQ2

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Friday, Mosaic Life Care mailed letters to patients after an unknown party used compromised credentials to access Oracle Health/Cerner's migration system and obtain sensitive information, including Social Security and driver's license numbers. The facility is offering free identity monitoring while law enforcement and Oracle investigate the breach.  KQ2
