- ➤ The St. Joseph Mustangs are hosting a fundraiser that will donate all online general admission ticket sales to help B&J Skate Center—its building was destroyed by an electrical fire Sunday morning. Mustangs owner Ky Turner said the game will serve as a way to support the local business. KQ2
- ➤ United Way of Greater St. Joseph announced that the STUFF THE BUS! school supplies drive will be held at Walmart locations (4201 North Belt Highway and 3022 South Belt Highway) on Friday, August 1 from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, August 2 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and they are seeking volunteers + donations of new supplies like binders, backpacks, and markers to help distribute items on August 7. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A St. Joseph man was arrested after allegedly threatening to shoot a building at William Jewell College on June 21; police say 25 year old Jacob A. Raczkowski (charged with first degree terrorist threat) was pursued near Sedalia and remains in custody in Lafayette County. KQ2
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ State Sen. Rusty Black chaired the Missouri School Funding Modernization Task Force meeting earlier this month, where education officials examined how using 2005 property tax values and hold-harmless rules created funding inequities among school districts. They said the task force will meet over the next year and deliver recommendations by December 2026 to update the formula without raising state revenue costs (with some districts currently receiving more funds due to higher local tax rates). GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Monday night, the St. Joseph City Council approved a 3% increase in sewer service fees effective July 1 and another 3% increase effective July 1 next year with a 7-0 vote. City manager Mike Schumacher said the increases will help improve wastewater infrastructure — and council also approved fees for the Remington Nature Center and REC Center. KQ2
- ➤ At Monday night’s city council meeting, officials approved increases in landfill fees to provide funds for new workers and additional equipment to manage more trash — a move that will take effect in January 2026 and again in January 2027. KQ2
- ➤ After a $513 million improvement package that included funds for a dental school and training camp ended in the last legislative session, Rep. Shields said UMKC remains committed to planning the dental school in St. Joseph—supported by ongoing private fundraising—and she expects lawmakers to revisit the proposal to train rural dentists.
