COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mothers Against Drunk Driving held an event in St. Joseph this weekend to raise awareness of impaired driving and share personal stories from those impacted by the issue. The event highlighted over 400 DWI arrests in Buchanan County in 2023 and urged residents to use safe ride alternatives — a measure supported by local law enforcement.  KQ2

CRIME NEWS

  • Federal prosecutors indicted 13 individuals for methamphetamine and cocaine distribution and illegal possession of machine guns, including Mexican, Guatemalan and U.S. nationals, after an investigation that seized about 40 kilograms of meth, two kilos of cocaine and 11 firearms, and on June 18, nine arrests were made during a multi-agency operation involving the St. Joseph Police Department—local officials are now working with federal agencies to further the case.  KQ2
  • St. Joseph Police responded to the Subway on Frederick Avenue where they found a man in the Woods Mini Mart parking lot suffering from stab wounds to his neck and armpit — he was taken to Mosaic Life Care and is in stable condition.  KQ2

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Pony Express Re‑Ride arrived at Patee House Museum this weekend after completing its journey from San Francisco to St. Joseph. The event marked the 165th recreation of the historic mail route—families joined riders and viewed samples of transported mail.  KQ2

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eight students from Central High School in St. Joseph competed at the 100th anniversary National Speech and Debate Association tournament where Jacob Ransom advanced through 13 rounds in Extemporaneous Debate and finished fourth nationally. The team, its largest group ever from the district—coached by Joseph Barbosa, Ashley Crawford, and Mindy Erickson—set a milestone for the school in the event.  KQ2
  • State Rep. Cameron Parker introduced a bill that would let Missouri students in business, biology, elementary education, psychology and nursing transfer 60 college credits between public universities and community colleges — the plan aims to reduce repeated courses and will take effect by the 2028-29 school year if Governor Mike Kehoe signs before July 15.  St. Joseph Post
