- ➤ After decades of work, community members and city officials broke ground next to the St. Joseph Recycling Center on a new $5 million animal shelter covering 13,000 square feet—designed with larger holding areas for pets and extra room for adopters—that is set to open in June next year. - ➤ The Silver and Gold Senior Club held their monthly outing at Cool Crest Garden Golf where seniors enjoyed mini golf and Mustangs players gave free game tickets — Hearing Connection provided lunch sandwiches to boost the event's social atmosphere. The club is planning a bowling league for next month. KQ2
- ➤ On June 23, the St. Joseph Public Library will host a community blood drive at the Downtown Library from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Residents can drop in or make an appointment and donors will receive a t-shirt — plus two Royals game tickets — while supplies last. KQ2

- ➤ Residents are warned by the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office of a scam where texts falsely claim to be from the Missouri Department of Transportation—stating that an unpaid ticket will lead to arrest and suspension of driver’s licenses—despite MoDOT having no such authority. KQ2

- ➤ Madame President Camp will run from July 14 through 16 at Missouri Western to teach leadership, civic education, activism, communication and self-discovery to middle school girls aged 11 to 13 — hosted by the St. Joseph Quorum Initiative — with registration open for limited spots. - ➤ Missouri hemp business leaders are planning an initiative petition to repeal the constitutional amendment that legalized recreational marijuana and allow cannabis with intoxicating hemp THC products to be sold alongside alcohol & tobacco. They said they will draft the petition language next week and plan to obtain enough signatures by May for the proposal to appear on the November ballot. St. Joseph Post
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Missouri American Water announced that parts of Buchanan County are under a boil water advisory after a water main break in St. Joseph. Emergency repairs started at 8:30 a.m.—repair work is expected to take seven hours while the advisory will remain for about 48 hours and residents must boil water for three minutes for drinking or cooking. - ➤ Bethany Duckworth, a local mother and wife, was diagnosed with Fibrosing Mediastinitis after eight months of worsening symptoms but her insurance has denied coverage for the treatment they say is medically unnecessary+ she is now using a GoFundMe to help pay for the $22,000 cost while she searches for an answer so she can return to work. - ➤ Two young weightlifters from Wesley Weightlifting Club, 11-year-old Aliza Meyer and 10-year-old Blaise Atkinson, will compete at the 2025 USAW National Championships in Colorado Springs from June 21-29. They said they joined after watching a TikTok video and want to build strength and confidence (coach Dennis Snethen said the event will give them their first taste of national competition). KQ2
