Good morning, Saint Joseph. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 17th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On June 15, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day raised alarm over scams targeting seniors—scams that are growing with new technology—and Nick Gertsema of Gertsema Wealth Advisors urged victims to report these incidents to authorities.  KQ2

CRIME NEWS

  • A St. Joseph man, 34-year-old Logan Tipton, was charged in Platte County with two counts of second-degree burglary and two counts of first-degree property damage after alleged break-ins in Timber Park and Running Horse Corridor last week—he is held on a $50,000 bond—according to the Sheriff's Office.  St. Joseph Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Missouri lawmakers passed a bill that creates a reimbursement process so high school graduates can attend career-certificate programs for free, and the legislation now awaits Gov. Mike Kehoe’s signature. The bill sets academic and participation requirements—2.5 GPA, 95% attendance, 50 hours of unpaid tutoring, and Algebra I proficiency—to support students who do not qualify for existing aid programs.  St. Joseph Post
  • On Friday, members of the St. Joseph Mustangs visited Lindbergh Elementary to share their love of baseball and bond with students—reading aloud and helping with lesson plans. The players also encouraged the kids to pursue their dreams by setting a strong example as local role models.  KQ2
  • Crews are working on projects funded by a $20 million bond passed in April that are upgrading sidewalks, audio systems, and athletic fields at local schools. Officials say the work will be finished before the next school year if weather does not delay outdoor projects.  KQ2
  • The St Joseph Safety and Health Council opened its week-long Safety Town to teach local children about traffic rules, fire safety, and stranger danger (with guidance from instructors, volunteers, and guest speakers) and the program will run from June 23rd to July 7th.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Missouri lawmakers in a special session earlier this month approved an incentive package to keep the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals in the state, and Gov. Mike Kehoe signed the three bills into law. Representative Brenda Shields said the teams boost tax revenue and economic activity (which matters as Missouri faces a shrinking Congressional seat count) and helps draw new businesses to the state.  St. Joseph Post
