  • The St. Joseph Public Library is hosting Vietnam veteran and author Retired Colonel Milt Toratti at East Hills Library on June 7 at 2:00 p.m.—Adults may join to hear his oral histories and book signing with proceeds aiding the Cameron Veterans Home.  KQ2
  • Mike Grossman, a Hall of Fame Special Olympics athlete, retired after 20 years at Eckard's Home Improvement as friends, family, and co-workers celebrated his service on Thursday. His team said he was always ready to help and will return when needed+ his local achievements were honored during the event.  KQ2

BUSINESS NEWS

  • On May 30, Dakota Stufflebean celebrated the opening of Refined Beauty Co. at 1107 North 26th Street in St. Joseph, hosting tours, giveaways + vendors donating 10% of profits to Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Joseph.  KQ2
  • Missouri Western State University's Craig School of Business announced that Taten Piepergerdes won the annual franchise competition and will head to Corpus Christi to run a new Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. He is flying to Dallas for a National Leadership Conference, and director Pam Klaus reminded him to enjoy the weekend because real work starts after his return (following his family celebrations).  KQ2

CRIME NEWS

  • Kylie Barmann from Wathena pleaded guilty on May 30 to abusing a cat (she threw it on a concrete floor, kicked it multiple times, and stood on its head causing its death) and will serve a year in Buchanan County jail with credit for 75 days served.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A bill passed at the close of the legislative session will let St. Joseph use its Land Bank to revitalize dilapidated and vacant homes by easing rules that once only allowed purchasing adjacent properties—Chamber of Commerce President Natalie Hawn said the changes also broaden eligibility for the Nuisance Act and add tax incentives, with the governor expected to sign the law soon.  St. Joseph Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • St. Joseph Health Department announced the clinic will be closed from June 2 to June 9 — immunizations, communicable disease monitoring, tuberculosis testing, pregnancy testing, and temporary Medicaid enrollment will be unavailable. Other health services remain open and the clinic will reopen on June 10 at 8:00 a.m.  KQ2
