ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A St. Joseph man was killed and a 6-year-old girl was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon in Country Club Village when a 37-year-old woman drove the wrong way on Business 29 at John Glenn Road and hit a car carrying a 35-year-old man, who died at the scene—Mosaic Life Care treated the woman for serious injuries.  KQ2
  • Andrew County Route 59 is closed at Country Club Road due to a vehicle crash — MoDOT and the Highway Patrol are working the scene and expect the road to remain closed for several hours.  KQ2

CRIME NEWS

  • St. Joseph Police investigated a May 24 shooting when officers arrived at 11:15 p.m. near Dollar General on St. Joseph Avenue and found a female victim with a gunshot wound in her left foot at the intersection of Randolph Street and St. Joseph Avenue — surveillance footage showed a white SUV and a southbound vehicle with an occupant discharging a firearm, and EMS transported the victim to Mosaic Life Care.  KQ2

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The St. Joseph Public Library will kick off its summer reading program with a party at Washington Park Library on May 31. Students must read 12 hours over the summer—earning prizes and a spot in a grand prize drawing when they meet the challenge.  KQ2
  • A 14-year-old student from St. Joe is competing at this week's Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC — the national contest is celebrating its 100th anniversary and includes six other spellers from Missouri.  St. Joseph Post
  • At the May 27 meeting, the SJSD Board recognized students from multiple schools for their end-of-year achievements in front of parents, coaches, and teachers. Dr. Ashly McGinnis noted that the board voted to upgrade district facilities including HVAC improvements and welcomed new board member Tom Richmond (excited to learn the board process) as the school prepares for the next year.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Manager Mike Schumacher said budget talks revealed a 6.4% population decline over the past 10 years that has hurt city revenue—sales tax revenue has fallen—and he said council and Chamber partners will work aggressively to boost housing and population growth as the city prepares a $200 million budget for the next fiscal year starting July 1.  St. Joseph Post
  • The St. Joseph City Council considered a plan during Tuesday's work session to raise sewer bills by three percent in 2025 and 2026 following a Burns & McDonnell study—residential customers may see about a $1.85 increase in 2025 and a $1.94 increase in 2026. The Council will hold a sewer rate hearing on June 9 and may vote on the plan on June 23 with any increase taking effect on July 1 if approved.  KQ2
  • St. Joseph City Council passed a funding agreement with the YMCA this evening that will provide $7 million for constructing an aquatic facility at 3601 N. Village Drive — the city will also cover $270,000 in annual operational costs. Mayor John Josendale noted strong community support for the plan.  KQ2
