COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Good Dads Luncheon in St. Joseph is 12 weeks into a 16-week program that teaches fathers how to build healthier families and communities+ Tim Doyle, the program director, said the classes give dads clear guidance to become more involved before they graduate in four weeks and a new course starts this summer.  KQ2
  • Good Times Event Center is hosting a benefit this weekend for Emilee Bibb—a 17-year-old Benton High School student diagnosed with adrenocortical carcinoma who is now fighting an infection; the event will start at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 24 and continue into Sunday with an auction beginning at 3 p.m.  KQ2

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Goodwill reopened its newly improved store at 3615 Faraon with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that surprised early customers with discounts and a renewed focus on empowering people through work services— the store is open today from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. with hours subject to change.  KQ2

CRIME NEWS

  • Juan Ramirez-Valencia was indicted by a federal grand jury on May 20th for illegal reentry after his arrest in Buchanan County on March 27th for leaving the scene of an accident and pleading guilty to that misdemeanor on May 6th—he faces up to two years in federal prison after his removal from the U.S. on August 22nd, 2020.  KQ2

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The St. Joseph School District celebrated its custodial staff this week during its annual Cleanest Building Ceremony—an event honoring the staff who keep school buildings safe and well-maintained. Pershing Elementary was named the cleanest school and custodians received gift cards and a Chick-fil-A lunch as awards for their hard work.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sergeant Shane Hux with the Missouri Highway Patrol in St. Joseph said motorists must plan carefully and obey traffic laws during the Memorial Day holiday as increased traffic and construction work are expected to change travel patterns. Triple-A Missouri reported that 950,000 travelers will hit the roads + gas prices average $2.81 per gallon, urging drivers to start early to avoid congestion.  St. Joseph Post
  • City officials have proposed changing the five-way intersection at Noyes Boulevard and Frederick Avenue to a four-way intersection to address traffic signal issues and safety concerns. Residents in the Farleigh Place Neighborhood will be invited to a public meeting on May 29 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall to discuss options — one that could convert Farleigh Terrace to a dead end with a sharp turn for emergency vehicles or one that would allow a right exit from Noyes.  KQ2
  • Crews from E.L. Crawford Construction will begin work on June 2 at Krug Park for an $11.75M renovation that will include installing fencing, signs, and phased improvements to the amphitheater, castle, children's circus, picnic shelters, and restrooms. Some park areas will be closed during construction to ensure safety + the fountain and waterfall will be off until the project is completed in fall.  KQ2
  • St. Joseph lost planned funding when Missouri House Bill 19—part of a $513 million capital improvement bill that included about $12 million for local projects—failed to pass before the legislative session ended. District 11 Rep. Brenda Shields said key projects like upgrades to the Chiefs Training Camp, Mosaic Life Care’s emergency center and plans for a new dental school will now rely on general revenue, which may delay their progress.  KQ2
