- ➤ Carden Park Elementary teacher Kristina Thomas, who is fighting a rare bone and tissue cancer, was surprised this week when colleagues and students held an emotional assembly that raised $5,318 (donations still rising) to help her prepare for more chemotherapy; she said teaching gives her strength (and she hopes to ring the cancer-free bell and return to class) as she continues her battle. - ➤ Missouri Western State University received a 3% rise in its core budget but President Elizabeth Kennedy said that is not enough to cover a $6 million jump in fixed costs. She noted that the campus will raise tuition 7 ½% (adding about $25 per credit hour) since its share of state funding is only $700,000 to $800,000—far less than that received by some smaller schools.
