COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Graduates from Buchanan County Treatment Court were honored for completing an 18-month program aimed at reducing drug and alcohol abuse—twelve participants, including Kip Traster, celebrated their achievement. The program helps offenders learn new routines and rebuild responsible lives. KQ2
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Seven individuals have applied for the open seat on the St. Joseph School District Board of Education. The board members will review all candidates tomorrow night and may swear in the new member at a 5:30 p.m. meeting (Noyes Administration Building). KQ2
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Mike Kehoe said lawmakers are considering a $300 million incentive package to build a new Royals stadium in Clay County as the legislative session wraps up this week. He added that meetings with county commissioners and other officials are shaping plans to keep the team in Missouri before Friday's deadline. St. Joseph Post
- ➤ The city council held a work session on fire station #10 and chose 303 East Hyde Park to speed up response times and support future expansion—Interim Chief Jamey said the project has a $4.29M CIP funding budget and will begin design soon. KQ2
- ➤ Buchanan County is planning three projects to boost community development — one project will convert the old East Buchanan Middle School into fairgrounds with a new livestock show building costing between $1 million and $1.3 million, another will upgrade the county assessor’s office with new walk-up windows including a handicap accessible window, and the third will build a drainage pipe behind the YMCA with a new retention pond to release more land for development. County officials hope these projects will eventually lead to the return of a Buchanan County fair and improved public services. KQ2
- ➤ Local state senator Rusty Black, a former educator, was chosen to chair the Missouri School Funding Modernization Task Force & will work with 15 members to review the K-12 funding model with a report due by Dec. 1. KQ2
- ➤ At Monday night's meeting, the St. Joseph City Council approved a first reading on an ordinance that would fund a $7 million indoor aquatic center at the YMCA – the project will include a competitive 50-meter pool and a family wellness pool. The council will vote on the funding plan at its next meeting on May 27. KQ2
- ➤ The Missouri House passed a plan that would help keep the Royals and Chiefs in Missouri by funding up to half the cost of a new stadium and a refurbished Arrowhead Stadium, offering teams up to $50 million in tax credits. Lawmakers raised concerns about the rushed process and incomplete cost details—some saying a special session may be needed if the Senate does not act before the legislative year ends. St. Joseph Post
