COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Big Brothers, Big Sisters of St. Joseph held its annual Big Swing Golf Tournament at Moila Country Club to raise funds for matching fees (averaging $1,500 per match) for its programs. The organization will hold its Ignite 5k on June 14 to further support its mission.  KQ2
  • The City of St. Joseph will host River Bluff Trails Fest from May 16 to 18 at 1502 MacArthur Drive—its headquarters for a weekend of ride clinics, races and family events. Organizers say the fest will include junior and senior activities—ensuring fun for everyone.  KQ2
  • High school seniors from Central High School and Benton High School worked in the hot weather at King Hill Cemetery, moving brush and logs for a cleanup that honors those who have passed. They continue to gather sticks and clean headstones as they complete their volunteer work after the school year ended.  KQ2

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Daily's Premium Meats broke ground today on a $100 million expansion project that will double the city's bacon production and add over 100 jobs & Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe highlighted the value of local workforce training as part of the plan.  St. Joseph Post
  • Buchanan County had strong tourism in 2024 but St. Joseph lacked enough hotel rooms as rates rose nearly $11 compared to 2023—causing a drop in occupancy and over 3,000 fewer rooms booked. Convention and Visitors Bureau spokesman Christian Mengel said new hotel developments near Frederick Avenue and the North Village Shoppes may help bring more visitors closer to local attractions.  St. Joseph Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • After board member Rick Gehring stepped down, the St. Joseph School District Board received five applications for the vacant seat at its May 12 meeting, with board president LaTonya Williams saying they want someone who can commit time and supports the long range plan. The application deadline is today at 4 P.M and interviews are set for May 14 at 5:30 P.M at the Noyes Administration Building (1415 North 26th Street).  KQ2
  • The Northwest Missouri State University Board of Regents approved new programs for fall and spring; starting in the fall, Northwest will offer a Bachelor of Science in Technology Systems Management in agricultural mechanics and a Master of Science in Management Science focused on analytical tools for data and AI (available online and on campus). In the spring, a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration will launch to support local leadership and community growth.  St. Joseph Post
