- ➤ St. Joseph Mustangs and United Way are honoring community volunteers during baseball season—last season, Mustangs owner Ky Turner recognized volunteer Isaac Wheel-iam Unruh with the Team Player Award. Nominations for this year's award are open until May 6th, and winners will be honored at Friday home games at Phil Welch Stadium when the season opens on May 28th. St. Joseph Post
- ➤ United Way of Greater St. Joseph has set PACE sessions for local agencies to learn new strategies at its facility at 118 South 5th Street and on Zoom. The sessions will cover legal aid and housing tips on April 29 at 10:00 a.m.—a Resources 101 session on May 7 at 10:00 a.m.—a crime prevention talk with the St. Joseph Police on May 21 at 11:00 a.m.—and a discussion on professional boundaries with Missouri Western social work professors on June 10 at 10:00 a.m. KQ2
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A search warrant executed by the Buchanan County Special Operations Unit and the St. Joseph Police Department Special Response Team on April 18th at 144 Turner Road led to the arrest of a man aged 51, a man aged 36, and a woman aged 38 on charges of stolen property, illegal drugs, and weapons as officers found methamphetamine, prohibited weapons, plus several stolen vehicles including motorcycles, an ATV, a pickup, and a flatbed trailer with a motor and transmission. - ➤ At around 4 p.m. on April 23rd, a St. Joseph resident saw a vehicle abandon a dog along Southeast Turner Road—although the dog did not seem hurt, it was gone when authorities arrived, and the incident is treated as a recurring crime that may lead to misdemeanor charges. KQ2
- ➤ Katherine Deweese, a St. Joseph woman, was sentenced to 120 days in shock time in Buchanan County jail after a wrong way crash on I-229 killed Ryan Coffman in March—police noted she smelled of alcohol and missed clearly placed signs. KQ2
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Juniors and seniors at Savannah High School listened on Wednesday as Morgan Domann explained how her family was deeply affected when an impaired driver killed her sister Savannah and her unborn child in January 2022. The school also held a docudrama exercise that simulated a motor vehicle crash while the Missouri State Highway Patrol reminded students that drivers are responsible for every decision behind the wheel. - ➤ After Rick Gehring resigned this month, the school board will meet Monday, April 28 at 5:30 p.m. (Troester Media Center) to accept his resignation and begin the process for his replacement. The board will post the vacancy on its website and allow residents two weeks to apply before reviewing candidates in open session. KQ2

- ➤ Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe urged residents to obtain REAL ID-compliant identification by May 7 as federal rules will require approved ID for boarding flights and entering federal facilities. The Missouri Department of Revenue noted that only about 45% of document holders have a REAL ID+ it is ready to assist those who need one. KQ2
