COMMUNITY NEWS

  • M'Shoogy's animal rescue has received a $10,500 grant from the Community Foundation of Northwest Missouri—provided by the Mary Margaret Hodgin Fund—to build larger pens that give rescued cats and dogs more room to run and socialize. The grant is part of a program that also supports other local animal care agencies.  St. Joseph Post
  • In April, United Way of Greater St. Joseph hosted its first Taste of United Way meeting to honor National Autism Awareness Month — local health organizations discussed challenges and the need for more autism resources.  KQ2

CRIME NEWS

  • A man from Northridge, California was sentenced to two years in prison after causing an emergency landing at Kansas City International Airport on an American Airlines flight in February 2022—he assaulted a police officer while trying to escape custody.  KQ2

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Benton High School’s Speech and Debate team grew quickly from a small group to over 60 students competing this season. The team will send several students to state and national events this spring and helps them build confidence in public speaking.  KQ2

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Police Chief Paul Luster urged residents to prepare for severe weather by choosing a safe room and ensuring that flashlights—along with batteries, water, and non-perishable food—are ready in an emergency kit. He warned that everyone must immediately take shelter when tornado warnings and sirens sound.  St. Joseph Post

  • Laura Chavez was sworn in as the municipal court judge in St. Joseph today to fill Judge Ted Elo's seat after his passing last month—she will serve out the term until the 2026 municipal election.  KQ2
