COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The League of Women Voters NWMO is teaming with the Missouri Western State University Foundation, NAACP St. Joseph Chapter, and the St. Joseph Retired School Personnel Association to host a community forum this Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the Rolling Hills Library Upper Story Room — Missouri State Representative Bill Falkner, Buchanan County Presiding Commissioner Scott Nelson, and Buchanan County Sheriff Bill Puett will offer five-minute commentary and answer audience questions — to discuss local issues.  KQ2
  • After Pope Francis died on April 21, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory is offering a register book sign-in at its facility (5005 Frederick Avenue) during the funeral ceremonies. Todd and Scott Meierhoffer said the service gives the community a respectful way to mark the loss.  KQ2
  • Local faith leaders held a holy hour this evening at the Cathedral of St. Joseph to pray for Pope Francis after his death. Deacon Joshua Fultz said the gathering offered hope as church members prayed for his soul and for a new leader to guide them.  KQ2

  • Taco Bandido on St. Joseph Avenue added a new privacy fence and commissioned a mural by local artist Devin Halbirt—who captured key northside highlights—to update its look while keeping its legacy of serving Mel Anderson’s original recipes since 1961.  KQ2

CULTURE NEWS

  • Pope Francis passed away Monday morning in Vatican City at age 88, and Bishop James V. Johnston of the Kansas City-St. Joseph Diocese said with sadness and surprise that the Catholic Church and the world learned of his unexpected death — he urged Catholics to remember him in prayer as they celebrated Easter.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Laura Chavez has been chosen by the St. Joseph City Council to fill the Municipal Court Judge vacancy following the death of Judge Ted Elo. Her appointment will be confirmed at the April 28th City Council meeting—she is a local native who served ten years as City Prosecutor and will remain in office until the municipal election next year.  St. Joseph Post
  • St. Joseph is busy with construction as private companies work to replace old water pipes and upgrade gas lines while Public Works Director Abe Forney says residents should report property damage or trash left by contractors by calling 816-271-4653 (for Public Works) or 816-271-4848 (for City Yards).  St. Joseph Post
  • MoDOT finished its environmental study on the double decker I-229 bridge in downtown St. Joseph and is moving into the design phase with a public comment period set for next month—officials noted the project will be added to the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program. The department also plans major road and bridge work in northwest Missouri to ensure the area receives proper attention.  St. Joseph Post
