COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Emmanuel Seventh-Day Adventist Church held a free event Saturday morning in mid-town to offer household goods, clothing, canned foods — and breakfast with listening and prayers for those in need. Craig Curtis said the church holds the event every other month to share its resources with the community. KQ2
- ➤ The St. Joseph Youth Alliance hosted its annual Children's Fair on Tuesday at the Civic Arena and gave children a chance to boost fine and gross motor skills while local businesses engaged with families. The fair continued on Tuesday night from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. KQ2
- ➤ The St. Joseph downtown Sertoma club received a $5,000 check from Sertoma International for celebrating 100 years of service—an honor given to clubs with a long history. The club, which has been part of the community for 111 years, will vote on which local agency will benefit from the funds. KQ2
- ➤ The YMCA held its Pedal for the Pool event on Monday morning in St. Joseph and raised almost $29,000—far surpassing its $5,000 goal to support plans for a new aquatic center. Volunteers, including the Central and Savannah swim teams, pedaled several miles as they helped build toward the center’s $15,000,000 target by the end of the month. KQ2

- ➤ Two new hotels and a conference center will soon be built on a vacant lot on the southeast corner of Fredrick and Woodbine. - ➤ The St. Joseph School District Foundation held its 19th annual tribute on April 14 to honor teachers and staff with a banquet featuring food and fun. The event awarded Support Staff of the Year Jennifer Koch, Innovator of the Year Ashley Zeiler, and Teacher of the Year Mary Sanders—Executive Director Julie Cobb said the awards support classroom initiatives. - ➤ Rick Gehring, a former board member, announced his sudden resignation from the St. Joseph School District Board in a Facebook post today and said he made the decision after much reflection to ease his personal burden. He thanked his colleagues and expressed his deep care for the school district as he steps aside to focus more on his family. KQ2

- ➤ Workers removed the 1940 Pony Express statue from its base at 10th and Frederick Avenue so it will be cleaned, repaired, and given a protective coating by the City of St. Joseph Parks Department—work expected to finish by summer in time for peak tourism. St. Joseph Post

- ➤ St. Joseph native Chris Michaels stepped down as head basketball coach at Benton and will lead Jefferson City's girls' program, a decision that surprised current and former players.
