COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of Greater St. Joseph invites community members to its Taste of United Way session, 'Understanding Autism and Opportunities for Support,' on Tuesday, April 22 at United Way with doors opening at 7:45 a.m. and the program beginning at 8:00 a.m. The session features a collaborative discussion with Samaritan Counseling Center, Inc. & United Cerebral Palsy and guests from Progressive Community Services sharing insight into autism support and available local resources, with registration required to attend.  KQ2

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Plans are underway to build a Marriott-operated TownePlace Suites hotel with 129 rooms on a 4.7-acre lot at 1401 North Woodbine Road—north of Stoney Creek Hotel, and the City Council will first read a bill on Monday proposing to accept $9,778 for future professional services related to the project.  KQ2

CULTURE NEWS

  • The St. Joseph Christian Band have practiced hard and will perform at the Chicago Festival of Gold today at Orchestra Hall. Band director Joe Voga said the group was chosen after a year of auditions to give students a chance to play before an international audience.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Buchanan County Sheriff Bill Puett said his department is developing an app that will send push notifications about scams + give residents educational tips to verify suspicious calls as scammers use artificial intelligence to target victims.  St. Joseph Post
  • The City of St. Joseph is inviting residents to complete the 2025 City of St. Joseph Direction Finder Survey to help shape future city services. City Manager Mike Schumacher said about 4,000 randomly selected residents will receive the survey by mail and urged everyone to complete it soon—answers will guide upcoming decisions.  KQ2
  • During Monday's council meeting, councilmembers will vote on a resolution of intent to issue $60 million in development revenue bonds to fund the construction of two boutique hotels and a conference center on a seven point seven acre site that once housed the Ramada Inn, Americas Value Inn and Applebee’s. The project—a partnership between the city, Steven Craig and STJ Hotel Group—will include 249 hotel rooms, fitness centers, lobby bars and restaurants, pools and about 12,640 square feet of conference space.  KQ2
  • Congressman Sam Graves announced he is accepting applications from North Missouri students for service academy nominations for the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, U.S. Military Academy, or U.S. Naval Academy. Students may call Congressman Graves' Kansas City District Officer at (816) 792-3976 and must meet all criteria by the October 10th, 5:00 p.m. deadline.  KQ2
  • Missouri House Budget Committee approved almost $4 billion in construction funding last Thursday, including 45 earmarked items for projects such as healthcare facilities, road improvements, and the Pony Express Museum in St. Joseph. The construction budget—which increased spending by $76 million over the governor's request—will be debated in the full House Tuesday as reauthorized projects from the American Rescue Plan Act continue to shape investments.  St. Joseph Post
