COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Youth Alliance will host the Annual Children's Fair at the Civic Arena on April 15. The free event will engage children aged six and under with entertainment, interactive stations, and book-themed activities, running from 9:00-11:00 a.m. + 5:30-7:30 p.m.  KQ2
  • Voices of Courage Advocacy Center in NW Missouri offers free mental health treatment, forensic interviews, and support to children and families soon after abuse is reported—its program works with law enforcement, medical staff, prosecutors, and child services across nine counties to provide comprehensive care. Executive Director Melissa Birdsell said the center also provides prevention education in local schools and community groups to help reduce further harm.  St. Joseph Post

CRIME NEWS

  • A Buchanan County jury found 46-year-old Athena Rae Dawe — arrested leaving a drug house during a search warrant — guilty of possessing meth and a .380 Ruger handgun, and she will be sentenced in May.  St. Joseph Post
  • Contractor John Troyer, a Jamesport roofer, was fined nearly $300K after a federal investigation found he broke safety laws that led to the death of an 18-year-old worker in March 2023 — the Department of Labor deal also requires his company to join Missouri’s On-Site Safety and Health Consultation Program.  St. Joseph Post
  • Melanie Myers, 24, pleaded guilty to first-degree attempted robbery in the death of Dustin Allen Graham during a planned robbery on Nov. 10th, 2024—she was sentenced to 15 years in prison after prosecutors dismissed her second-degree murder charge.  KQ2
  • A Forest City man in his 60s was sentenced to 23 years for trafficking meth after a jury found him guilty on February 28th when investigators found more than 450 grams at his N. 3rd Street home during a March 2023 search — evidence that included a buyer arriving to purchase drugs — according to Buchanan County officials.  St. Joseph Post
  • A man aged 40 from St. Joseph was sentenced to eight years in prison by District Judge Daniel Kellogg after pleading guilty to methamphetamine possession with intent to sell—police found him passed out in his car in March and investigators discovered a third of a pound of meth in his vehicle.  St. Joseph Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lindbergh Elementary counselor Ella Sharp was named Northwest Missouri Counselor of the Year in a surprise assembly on Monday — she was nominated by nine colleagues and said the award is key as student mental health issues grow. Sharp's recognition comes as education professionals call for more support in schools.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of St. Joseph will begin restoring the iconic Pony Express Statue on April 14 by replacing its 23-ton granite base. Brooner Construction will remove the statue during the two-day project funded through ARPA funds—after the new base sets, the statue will be reinstalled.  KQ2
