COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Pony Express Museum will mark 165 years by opening its campus for free from April 3rd to 6th, inviting visitors to see its historic mail service exhibits. The event offers music in the board room and treats at Dick and Mignon's Soda Shop — guests can enjoy a sarsaparilla, root beer float, and a complimentary chocolate bar as they leave.  St. Joseph Post

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • St. Joseph Police Chief Paul Luster warned motorists and motorcycle riders to stay alert following a fatal crash that claimed the life of a young man earlier this month—he advised drivers to check blind spots and urged riders to wear helmets and high-visibility gear. He stressed that riders must stay sober on the road to help prevent further tragedies.  St. Joseph Post

CRIME NEWS

  • A 42-year-old St. Joseph man—Romeo Perez-Bravo—is accused of stealing a Minnesota man’s identity to work locally since 2009 and faces federal charges for aggravated identity theft and misuse of a Social Security number after the St. Joseph Police Department tipped off the Social Security Administration.  St. Joseph Post

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art is hosting the Juried Undergraduate Exhibition that will show 47 works by 31 students selected from 121 submissions by 45 artists from 18 schools—this exhibit runs from April 19 through June 15.   KQ2

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A study found that if proposed cuts to Medicaid and SNAP take effect, Missouri and Kansas could see nearly 30,000 jobs lost—Missouri could lose up to 22,000 jobs and Kansas about 5,600—with billions in federal funds at stake. The cuts may also hit rural areas hard as reduced dollars affect health care and food services.  St. Joseph Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The St. Joseph School District narrowed its search for a new high school site south of Highway 36 for a school under Proposition 2 on the April 8 ballot. The school board said it will share more details as planning moves forward — more information to come — to guide its decision.  St. Joseph Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • St. Joseph City Council passed a resolution today to support the school district's proposition 2 bond issue for a new high school complex and facility improvements ahead of the April 8 ballot. Board of Education President LaTonya Williams said the unanimous vote was vital after the proposal was pulled from the agenda on March 17 — council members revisited and approved it today.  KQ2
  • Kenny Cordonnier—St. Joseph's fire chief—will retire on April 4 after more than 43 years of service with the city. He began working in September 1981 and oversaw fire station 8 and the initial plans for fire station 10 as well as upgrades to the fire headquarters.  KQ2
