COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Barry Birr ended his 33-year run as host of KFEQ’s Hotline and retired after 41 years at KFEQ on Friday morning, earning a surprise key to the city from Mayor John Josendale—an honor that recognized his service during local emergencies. He took calls for two hours and received a 'Barry Birr Day' proclamation from the city council—marking his legacy in local broadcasting.  St. Joseph Post
  • Noyes Home for Children launched the Kindness St. Joseph initiative that asked K‑12 students to write essays honoring kind people and received 774 entries, including several about Larry Miller—known as 'The Walking Waver' for his uplifting local walks. Winners will be honored today at East Hills Mall Courtyard starting at 6 p.m.  St. Joseph Post

CRIME NEWS

  • The St. Joseph Police Department is asking for help to find a driver who hit a parked car near Cranberry Hill and Beachwood on March 8th at 5:30 a.m.—the driver mistakenly went to the wrong address when trying to exchange information.  KQ2
  • An 18-year-old man named Brayden Robertson was shot and killed in a gunfire exchange with police during a pursuit that began with an armed carjacking on the 600 block of Hall Street around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday morning — the chase ended near 28th and Mitchell with one suspect taken into custody and another fatally wounded — and one officer was treated for a minor wound.  St. Joseph Post
  • Officers identified the deceased suspect in Thursday’s officer–involved shooting as 18-year-old Brayden M. Robertson from St. Joseph after a report of an armed carjacking led to a pursuit where the suspect fired at officers before being fatally shot.  KQ2

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Candidate Jennifer Kerns answered questions on KQ2 ahead of the April 8th election for the St. Joseph School District Board of Education—she stressed the need to improve academics, enforce clear policies, and boost community engagement. Her comments reflected her long-term work with the PTA and her plan to make the district more attractive to local families and businesses.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Manager Mike Schumacher is working on the St. Joseph budget as the fiscal year ends June 30th while he meets with department heads to map out long term spending and sets aside 20% in reserve—ensuring essential services continue; the new budget will begin July 1st. He added that the process looks beyond a 12 month view to plan for expensive items and future needs.  St. Joseph Post
  • The intersection improvement project at U.S. Route 59 and Alabama Street has been delayed due to pre-construction utility work, and Stage 1 construction will begin on April 7. During Stage 1, Alabama Street from Route 59 to Sherman Street will be closed, and access to Lake Avenue and Brown Street will be restricted.  KQ2
  • Buchanan County Commissioner Ron Hook said seniors with the Homestead Tax Credit will still pay a 60-cent per $100 increase on property taxes due to a general obligation bond that is not covered by the credit — voters will decide on two new high schools on April 8.  KQ2
