COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Four local charities hosted an Empty Bowl Lunch yesterday in St. Joseph to fight hunger with meals donated by local restaurants—bringing in twice as many families as expected. A contest among donors chose Gina's Catering’s chicken pot pie as best dish—showing strong local support.  KQ2

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Crews from the St. Joseph Fire Department responded to a house fire at 1925 Mulberry St. Tuesday morning—extinguishing the flames while keeping the homeowner unharmed with no injuries reported.  KQ2

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Candidate Brian Kirk took part in a Q&A with KQ2 ahead of the April 8 election and said his 10 years as a public school teacher have prepared him to address the district's academic challenges. He detailed progressive ideas to retain local tax dollars and update older school buildings—efforts aimed at moving the district into the 21st century.  KQ2
  • Sen. Ben Brown from Washington sponsored a bill that would require public schools to offer extracurricular activities to homeschooled students after more than a decade of debate — the Missouri Senate unanimously passed the measure in February and House leaders referred it to the education committee over spring break.  St. Joseph Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The 2025 Joint Citizen's Law Enforcement Academy was held Tuesday night in Saint Joseph as a joint effort by the police department and the Buchanan County Sheriff's office. Applicants had to pass a background check and the event offered facility tours and demos from canine units, detectives, and the Special Response Team (SRT) (classes run through May 20th with a few seats left).  KQ2
  • City Manager Mike Schumacher said that construction on cell eight of the St. Joseph city landfill is 77% complete with M-Con now moving to the next phase—using clay, sand and piping—and that crews have begun work on cell nine to secure future operations. Schumacher noted that the approved space by the D-N-R and the contributions of local teams will keep the landfill running for years.  St. Joseph Post
